Lee Gibson Receives Stipend Award from Renowned Research Association

2016 Sep 6

Eight Fayetteville State University (FSU) students majoring in computer science have been awarded research stipends for the academic year 2016-2017, with possible extension to summer of 2017. This award was given by a program titled Collaborative Research Experiences for Undergraduates (CREU), which is a joint project of the Computing Research Association Women (CRA-W) and the Coalition to Diversify Computing (CDC), with support from the National Science Foundation.

Recipients of the stipend will work on research projects under the guidance of mentors at their home institutions, and they are strongly encouraged to present their CREU research at national or regional conferences. The program also provides financial support for travel to present research. According to the project website, the objective of the CREU program is to increase the number of women and underrepresented groups entering graduate studies in the fields of computer science and computer engineering by exposing them to the joy and potential of research.

With support from this program, the students will work with Dr. Sambit Bhattacharya, Associate Professor of Computer Science, and Dr. Bogdan Czejdo, Belk Distinguished Professor of Science & Technology, on two research projects. The faculty members wrote detailed plans for the research projects, which were competitively reviewed by a panel of experts and judged to be among the best proposals submitted this year. One research project is in the area of cooperative robotics and prepares students for the NASA Swarmathon competition, which the university won in 2016. In the other project, students will work on computer vision and machine learning algorithms to solve problems that may find applications in automated security and surveillance.

The FSU students awarded research stipends are:

Ashlee Gaskins, a junior computer science major from Fayetteville, N.C.

Brittany Jennette, a junior computer science major from Fayetteville, N.C.

Daphne Faircloth, a senior computer science major from Autryville, N.C.

Donny Lopera, senior computer science major from Hope Mills, N.C.

John Futrell, a senior computer science major from Fayetteville, N.C.

Lee Gibson, a senior computer science major from Monroe, N.C.

Ronald Eure, a junior computer science major from Gates, N.C.

Samuel Cooper, a senior computer science major from Fayetteville, N.C.
